2001 YOUNG ARTISTS COMPETITION WINNERS ANNOUNCED
Three Winners to Make New York Philharmonic Debut in Young People's Concert® on Saturday, November 10.

The winners of the 2001 Young Artists Competition, Pianist Hyung-Min Suh, age 11, Clarinetist Won-Jin Jo, age 16, and Pianist Ji-Yong Kim, age 10, were announced from the stage of Avery Fisher Hall this afternoon at the conclusion of today's final competition round. The preliminary round of the Young Artists Competition was completed Monday, October 29, after which the judges named twelve (12) young musicians for today's final round, selected from a field of one hundred and twenty-three (123) contestants.

On Saturday, November 10, at 2 p.m. in Avery Fisher Hall, Music Director Kurt Masur will lead the New York Philharmonic in a Young People's Concert® featuring the three winners from today's final competition. The program for this concert will be announced shortly.

Pianist Hyung-Min Suh, age 11, is a resident of Palisade Park, NJ and has been studying piano for seven years. Clarinetist Won-Jin Jo, age 16, is a resident of Malverne, NY and has been studying the clarinet for six years. Pianist Ji-Yong Kim, age 10, is a resident of Little Ferry, NJ and has been studying piano for five years.

This competition was held as part of Maestro Masur's valedictory season as the Orchestra's Music Director, in celebration of his steadfast dedication to the musical education of young people. The first Young Artist Competition convened in 1992 during Mr. Masur's inaugural season as Music Director and resulted in the Philharmonic debuts of pianist Helen Huang and violinist Colin Jacobsen.
